“The most rewarding moment is seeing how my patients react when they find out they’re pregnant. The joy in their faces is what makes the effort all worthwhile.”
Over the past 20 years, as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and then as a fertility specialist, Dr Fong has helped many couples deliver babies following natural conception and via assisted reproductive technology.
After graduating in 1990, Dr Fong completed his residency in Singapore, with an attachment in the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in London. He obtained MRCOG from the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in 1996.
Dr Fong is highly regarded in Singapore for his compassionate and dedicated approach to care for couples, and is one of the few specialists in Singapore to have comprehensive expertise in both male and female fertility issues, including surgical sperm retrieval, PCOS and endometriosis, and fertility treatments for older women. He says fertility is not just one person’s problem, and the social and emotional support both between and for couples can make a real difference.
This is why his approach is to manage the couple as a whole – not just one partner, and provide complete care so they don’t have to worry about visiting different specialists for more tests and analysis. Dr Fong supports couples through changing lifestyle habits, such as reducing stress, losing weight or quitting smoking, and he urges couples to seek advice and treatment early – and always be honest about their questions, concerns and worries.
Dr Fong enjoys working collaboratively with the experienced Virtus team in Singapore, and with its wider network in Australia and Ireland, and he hopes to bring fertility practice in Singapore to an even higher international standing.
- Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) - National University of Singapore
- Fellow, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRCOG) – London
- Fellow, Academy of Medicine Singapore (FAMS)
Dr Fong speaks English and Mandarin fluently as well as several Chinese dialects.
Dr Fong worked closely with Prof Thinus Kruger from South Africa while consulting with Singapore General Hospital, and was involved in the introduction of semen analysis standards to Singapore in the 1990s. The semen analyses for all IVF labs around the world today still use Kruger’s strict criteria for reporting.
Through his private practice he has also developed a unique understanding of treatment protocols for Asian and Caucasian patients, as they may present and respond differently for common concerns such as endometriosis.
